This poem conversation is deeply inspired by a few things in combination:
A story I read about Beatrice Harrison & her famous cello performance with the nightingale(s) who lived in her garden
Fannie Lou Hamer’s words, “Nobody's free until everybody's free”
This installment began with a question/prompt I asked/crafted for myself:
Humans sing with their whole bodies—each component’s voice creating an orchestra (in the case of these poems, we focus on the heart (hearth), mind (attic), and spirit/soul (clouds). The body isn’t free until each part is free to sing with its truest vibration, beneath the layer of fatigue & anxiety imposed by society (Fannie followed her famous words with “I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired”).
I'm afraid—what if the humming, whistling, thumping, scratching, grinding, and creaking disturb you both? -Attic asked. I'm fearful, too—to pump smoke & heat to the beat of my crackling, snapping, popping, roaring, and hissing. What if it's not welcome? -Hearth added I, too, am fearful that my soft & gently whispered voice won't ever be enough. But what if the sounds & experiences we produce are innately rhythmic, metronomic, soothing, relaxing, or energizing in a way that supports each other? And perhaps, we can work together to emphasize one of us (solo) when needed? -Clouds replied. Maybe we can't make music alone, only together. What if we won't create anything together unless we each contribute our truth & listen to each other's truth? Attic, you may offer auditory pieces, Hearth tactile, and myself visual. Maybe we must be willing to engage with each other, improvise with each other, and free each other's sound to hear the music that frees ourselves.
